Helen Frances Svoboda

HELEN FRANCES SVOBODA 1912 – 2014 Helen Frances (Koubek) Svoboda age 102 of Plattsmouth, NE passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at her residence. Helen was born on February 28, 1912 to Adolph Joseph and Antonia (Koukal) Koubek in Plattsmouth, NE. She graduated from Plattsmouth High School with the class of 1930. After graduating from high school, she attended Peru State Teachers' College for two years and then worked for the Norfolk Canning Company. She met the love of her life, John Vincent Svoboda; they married May 20, 1936 and were married over 60 years. Helen was a proud homemaker, wife, and mother. She was a member of the Church of The Holy Spirit, Catholic Daughters Our Lady of Loretto Court 709, P.C.C.W., and Stitch & Nibble Sewing Club. Helen loved to play cards, especially Pinochle, to try new recipes, and to crochet and sew. Many family, friends, and new mothers in the community benefited from her handiwork when they received beautiful crocheted blankets and other items lovingly created by Helen. She was a devout Catholic and a woman of great faith who believed strongly in the power of prayer. Helen was a lifelong resident of Plattsmouth and was a beloved friend to many in the community. Helen is survived by her two daughters: Margaret Kilibarda of Council Bluffs, IA, and Mary Svoboda-Chollet of Lenexa, KS, son-in-law: Dennis Horn of Plattsmouth, NE, six grandchildren: Kris Kilibarda (Doug Gibson), Dennis Horn, John Horn (Shannon), Patrick Horn (Laura), Sarah Shamblen (Greg), and Christine Chollet (fiancée Geoff Shepard); five great grandchildren: Christian, Ethan, and Cate Horn and Asher and Perrin (P.J.) Shamblen; and many family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Antonia Koubek, husband, John Svoboda, brother, Frank Koubek, sisters, Lillian Hohman and Antoinette Hohman, daughter Catherine Horn, and son-in-law, Jack Kilibarda. Visitation with the family will be from 5:30-9:00 P.M. with a Rosary Service held at 7:00 P.M., Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Church of The Holy Spirit. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the Church of The Holy Spirit in Plattsmouth with Father Loras K. Grell officiating, Dennis Horn II and Kris Kilibarda as lectors, Tony Salazar and Lynn Vinduska as acolytes, Terry Little as vocalist, and Jolene Rogge as organist. Pallbearers will be Kris Kilibarda, Dennis Horn, John Horn, Patrick Horn, Sarah Shamblen, and Christine Chollet. The Honorary Pallbearers will be the Catholic Daughters Our Lady of Loretto Court 709 of Plattsmouth. Final Resting Place will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Plattsmouth, NE. The family suggests memorials to Church of The Holy Spirit, or for Masses, and/or to the Plattsmouth Senior Citizens Center.
