HAZEL OTHELL CROSS 1926 – 2016 Hazel Othell (Cumpton) Cross age 89 of Plattsmouth, NE passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Hillcrest Health and Rehab in Bellevue, NE. She was born on November 20, 1926 to William Earl and Eva Ida (Baker) Cumpton in Loving, TX. Hazel was raised and schooled in Clovis, NM. She met Cecil Aubrey Cross and they married on July 18, 1942 in Portales, NM. Hazel and Cecil made their home and raised their children following the wheat harvest through New Mexico, Colorado, and Montana, and they later settled in Sacramento, CA. In 1977, Hazel and Cecil moved to Murray, NE. Later, Hazel moved to Iowa and then back to California. In 2003, Hazel moved to and lived in Nehawka, NE and Plattsmouth. She was a wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, great great grandma, and a homemaker. Hazel had worked as a nanny for Jennifer and Rebecca Boyer, in dietary services, and in commercial dry cleaning and laundry services. She had attended the Methodist Church in Nehawka and the Christian Church in Murray. Hazel is survived by her daughter: Evelyn Phelps and husband Leonard of Plattsmouth, NE; son: Cecil "Sonny" Cross Jr. and wife Sharon "Cookie" of Lampasas, TX; eight grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren, fifteen great great grandchildren; three sisters: Earlene Cook of Cleburne, TX; Carey Benjamin and husband Rod of Camas, WA; Helen Cumpton of Pocatello, ID; three brothers: Melvin Cumpton and wife Dimple of Sandy Hook, MS; Dale Cumpton of Camas, WA; Mark Cumpton and wife Stacy of Juntura, OR; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: William and Eva Cumpton, step-mother: Frostina "Frosty" Cumpton, husband: Cecil Cross Sr., three brothers: Allen Cumpton and his wife Bobbie, Perry Cumpton and his wife Betty, and Noel Cumpton and his wife Jimmie Jean, daughter: Carolyn Cross, grandson-in-law: Nick Shoemaker, granddaughter: Deborah K. Phelps, and great great granddaughter: Ariann Thorne. Visitations will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 P.M., with family greeting relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at Roby Funeral Home in Plattsmouth. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Roby Funeral Home in Plattsmouth with Pastor Jerry Quandt officiating and Carmen Thorne and Denise Weatherby as vocalists. The Pallbearers will be Lenny Thorne, Brian Phelps, Drew Phelps, Derek Phelps, Rick Cross, and Kyle Mogensen. The Honorary Pallbearers will be Leonard Phelps, Sonny Cross, Wayne Boyer, Andrew Pritchett, Russell Weatherby, Roger Balfour, Nick Kucera, and Art Newburn. Her Final Resting Place will be next to her husband Cecil and granddaughter Debbie at Lewiston Cemetery in Murray. Memorials to the Family (A suitable charity will be chosen at a later date).
