Robert "Bob" Gene Day

ROBERT GENE DAY 1951 – 2023 Robert “Bob” Gene Day age 72 of Plattsmouth, NE peacefully passed on to his Heavenly home on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at his residence. Bob was born on June 11, 1951 to Aubrey W. Day and Ruth P. (Moore) Day in Fairbury, NE. His parents later divorced and his dad remarried Martha Norman who became his step-mother. He had two older brothers Sammie and Paul. He was raised and schooled in Fairbury and graduated from Fairbury High School in 1970. He then joined the United States Air Force and he proudly served his country for four years. After training in Texas and Colorado he was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base for his term except for a brief deployment to Iceland. After his Air Force service he joined the Air National Guard and served for six years. He married Cathy Ann Buechler on August 12, 1972 in the old Presbyterian Church. They were blessed with four girls, ten grandchildren and two great granddaughters. Bob had many jobs in Plattsmouth and Omaha. While still in the Air Force he worked at the Kent Gas Station for Truman Page. He later worked as an appliance deliverer and installer. After working in supply with computers in the Air Force he worked at UNO in their computer department for 22 years until the University was moving the operation to the Lincoln campus and he didn’t want to commute. He then worked in maintenance for the Plattsmouth Community Schools. He also worked many years part-time for Boyd Linder and later Kirk at Linder Firestone. One of his best friends is Bob Snyder. They were in each other’s weddings and he was a big part of getting Vicki and Bob together. We had many great times celebrating special occasions and he was always making bets for Pepsi or sweet tea over sports that involved Florida teams. Bob was very Patriotic and a loyal and devoted member of the American Legion. He joined the Hugh J. Kerns American Legion Post #56 in 1987. He was Post Commander, Vice Commander and adjutant, County Commander and District Commander. He was also a 20 year member of the Legion 40/8 organization. He was also a member of the Sons of American Legion Squadron 56 for 23 years. Bob was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon. All four girls were baptized in our church. In his healthier times he loved taking the girls on short road trips to Fairbury for holidays or family reunions. He took them to the Stuhr museum in Grand Island and when they were into bowling there were always tournaments all a-crossed the state. Bob is survived by his wife: Cathy Day; his four daughters: Jeni (Mitch) Green, Anne (Brian) Akins, Lara Day (Dannyjoe Garrido), and Lisa (Chase) McAllister; ten grandchildren: Deanna Green, Corey Green, Andrew (Kayla) Green, Dennis Green, Hayley Dowell (Dylan Coop), Hope Dowell, Dylan Dowell, Aubree Day-Garrido, Hayden Day-Garrido and Chloe McAllister; two great granddaughters: Olivia Green and Wrenley Coop; his brother: Paul (Deb) Day; step sister: Kathy (Gary) Peters; sister-in-law: Sharon Day, brother-in-law: Jerry (Lori) Buechler, and sister-in-law Nancy (John) Cantergiani; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents: Aubrey and Martha Day, his brother: Sammie Day, and his son-in-law: Jason Dowell. There will be an Honor Guard escort from Roby Funeral Home 346 Avenue A to First Presbyterian Church 702 Chicago Avenue at 9:00 A.M., on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Visitations will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church in Plattsmouth. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Coplen officiating and Carol Wehrbein as organist. There will be a 40/8 Memorial Service at the conclusion of the Celebration of Life. The Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob’s grandchildren. The Hugh J. Kerns American Legion Post #56 Honor Guard will greet Bob at his arrival to the church. Memorials to the Family (a suitable charity will be chosen at a later date).
